What characterizes the style?

The Ikea style is also known as Scandinavian Modern.
The Scandinavian or Nordic Ikea style is characterized by bright interiors with a strong presence of light wood, like spruce and pine. Furniture is simple and unpretentious, and is characterized by honest use of materials: Things will not give out to be something other than what they actually are. Predominant use of natural materials like wood, wool, stone and leather. Artificial materials have not been accepted, no glitter, glam and fluorescent colors.

What things are typical of the style?
Furniture and lighting from the golden age of Scandinavian Design in the 50- and 60-s: shell chairs by Arne Jacobsen and Poul Henningsen lamps. But in contrast to the retro style it combines these with modern Scandinavian design, such as a pendant lamp by Cecilie Manz, a ullsofa from Norway Says and a generous dollop of Ikea.

What kind of atmosphere does the style creat?

The style is fairly gender neutral, and one can find both rural and urban expression within the genre. The expression can be both cool and warm depending on the use of the fabrics and colors. But the style is always rooted in local culture, which creates a homely atmosphere. Within the Scandinavian Ikea style, you can create both formal and casual living environments.
